Lake Major Dam Replacement, Halifax Water
Meco was retained by Halifax Water to design a replacement dam for the Lake Major Reservoir, the primary water supply source for Dartmouth and surrounding communities.
The replacement structure included a reinforced concrete labyrinth spillway, low-level outlet works, fish passage facilities, and earthfill saddle dam structures.
The work included:
- Concept development and feasibility studies.
- Hydrologic and hydraulic analyses.
- Inflow Design Flood (IDF) and Maximum Design Flood (MDF) assessments.
- Geotechnical investigations and foundation design.
- Structural design of spillway, sluiceway, and fishway systems.
- Preparation of tender and construction documents.
- Contract administration and resident engineering services during construction.
The replacement dam was successfully completed within budget and schedule requirements. This project demonstrates Meco’s ability to deliver complex dam rehabilitation and replacement projects from concept through construction.
Grand Falls Main Dam Spillway Rehabilitation, Newfoundland & Labrador Hydro
Meco was retained by Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro to develop a rehabilitation design for the Grand Falls Main Dam located on the Exploits River.
The project involved replacing the existing flashboard system with a modern Obermeyer inflatable gate system and upgrading supporting infrastructure while maintaining operations at this critical hydroelectric facility.
The work included:
- Detailed design of an inflatable gate system.
- Water control planning and cofferdam design.
- Development of phased construction sequencing.
- Design of bridge and access structures.
- Preparation of construction drawings and specifications.
- Construction support and shop drawing review.
